The Red House has not been red for a number of years, now being painted white with the name set out in smart modern lettering above the door. Or maybe "red" meant something else in this case: who knows?

Solly Street is an area of quite pleasant council flats and student accommodation not far from, but well out of the way of, the main drag of West Street. No one comes here accidentally, but that's not to say it's not worth seeking out. The latest owners have established a bit of a music scene here, and even when there's no one occupying the small stage just to the right of the front door, there's music on the juke box.

The bar is a modern affair with three hand pumps of which one has a cider and on my recent visit there was just Marston's EPA for ale drinkers, the other pump having a Doom Bar clip turned around. The beer was in excellent condition, but on a midweek night there were just the two of us, plus the barman and a cat.

The room to the left is comfortable, with upholstered benches, small square tables and some rather nice easy chairs. There's a stone fireplace with an ornately framed mirror above. A fire would have been good on this bitter February night, but it was pleasant enough without.

The old wood panelling has had a couple of windows put in, showing a sort of lobby towards the rear which leads to an area of decking at the back of the building which would be for smokers, I guess, because the view is nothing to speak of.

I've been here before on a Monday when the place was closed, but there's nothing externally to indicate which days the pub is open. The pub's Facebook page suggests they are open Mondays but closed Tuesdays, but doesn't appear to have been updated since October 2011. I've not been here when a band's been on, or when there's a crowd here, but if you're out this way and find it open, it's a good place to have a drink.
