Just over 10 years on from the last review of this pub, we had exactly the same experience as Will Larter. This Thwaites-owned pub in the village that is more famous for being the home to the Bradfield Brewery was full of diners on our Thursday lunchtime visit. We had no option but to prop up the bar.

Food is clearly the mainstay here. We were asked as soon as we walked in whether or not we had booked. But they were happy for us to stand at the bar to drink! 3 of the real ales were from Thwaite's - IPA, Amber & Baird. Although they do also stock Bradfield beers as guests - Farmer's Blonde & Belgian Blue were both on.

With buses on the hour each way through the village, it's easy enough to get to and from here and it feels a world away from the city. However, where the bus stops heading back towards Loxley is not immediately obvious (it's basically opposite where it dropped you off).

The food did look good and with 5 cask ales, this place is worth a visit.

A more recent visit found the pub crammed full of diners - well, it was Sunday afternoon. The only option for drinkers at this time of year, with the beer garden not really a sensible option, is to lean on the bar. There are now seven hand pumps, still with mostly Thwaites beers on. I had the Nutty Black, which was OK but quite expensive at £3 a pint for a 3.3% mild, I thought. There were also Lancaster Bomber and Original (or what I persist in calling Bitter) plus a couple of seasonals. In addition they now have Bradfield beers available, mostly bottled versions at a pretty reasonable £2.50 for 50cl, plus the popular Christmas beer, Belgian Blue. This is still not a pub to go to for just a drink, unless it's part of a crawl, and with the 61/62 bus stop almost outside the door it makes a suitable interlude between the Nags Head and the Plough.

A Thwaites pub near the church in High Bradfield. The emphasis is very much on food, with every table set with menus and cutlery. This can be off-putting to the drinker, and we had to ask where we should sit! There's quite a view over the valley from the windows at the back. The arm chairs were narrow and not particularly comfortable; the original rooms had been knocked through and there were fake beams. My bête noir, 80s pop, was unavoidable from the loudspeakers. The main redeeming feature was the range of beers from Thwaites available on the five hand pumps: Bomber, Wainwright, Original, Bee Good and Bloomin' Ale (a wheat beer). These were all under the £3 per pint mark and in good condition, but this isn't really a pub for drinkers - at least, not at 6pm. Maybe I'll try again at a different time of day.
