A standard looking corner boozer, whatever the positive plans for the pub that were relayed to Malden man by the landlady a couple of years ago were, it appears they don't involve real ale. Confronted with three vacant pump handles and enquiring if there actually was any available the young and obviously inexperienced girl behind the bar gestured to the moisture beaded keg fonts, we left.

Situated on the edge of the town centre and well off the tourist trail, this is a back street corner pub serving mostly local trade. Inside there is an opened out newly carpeted room with a pair of very thick archways between the seating area and bar. The rear rises up a few steps to a lino floored area which houses a pool table and dartboard. A sign outside refers to a skittle alley, no sign of this but there is a long outbuilding off the rear patio garden which I surmised once contained this, later confirmed by the relatively new landlady who told me that she intends to refurbish and reopen this in due course. Hopefully that will happen, not many skittle alleys left in pubs.
Décor includes 60s and 70s team photos of FA Cup winning teams from Liverpool, Leeds and Arsenal, one corner has a case of trophies, for what I don't know. The attractive stained glass windows have inserts of what look like vases with foliage sprouting above as well as a blue banding seen elsewhere in town.
Only one beer on, a passable Ringwood Best, one unclipped plus a reverse which from the shape might have been from Hop Back.
A table of condiments in a corner indicates that food is served but there were no signs of menus at around 5pm.
The pub is nothing special really however the landlady was certainly of the old school type who sees everything and misses nothing, she happily told me of her plans for the place and of the pub's history, apparently the Five Bells are those that can be heard here from the various churches and cathedral. She seems to have positive plans for the pub, live music and discos now feature, I wish her and the pub well.

A Victorian town pub next to the busy Salt Lane carpark area consisting of a single corner bar and a shaded walled garden. Part of the bar is a games area. It's quite dark inside which makes it feel cosy rather than gloomy. There is a Victorian open fireplace, carpeted floor, pool table and gaming machines which make it feel a bit cluttered. Wood paneled walls and some interesting stained glass add to the character. The staff spoiled the effect slightly by being apathetic and inert, while the battered furniture cheapened the effect further. The only ale on was Ringwood Best which was well and truly past its – well, best. It's usually a decent enough pub, and I'd be happy to drop in as part of a crawl but I wouldn't stay too long.
