A lovely old stone-built village pub, looking pretty as a picture as I cycled round the corner by the equally gorgeous church. Inside it's even better, as not only was there a small crowd of locals, drinking and holding forth - and it was not yet 4pm on a Wednesday afternoon - but the interior of the pub is very well presented, and although the original small cottage rooms have long since disappeared, the present layout of a large room to the left and a smaller one to the right is nicely done. The ceilings are held up by what look like recently installed beams, but these are proper beams - none of your RSJ covered with bits of timber and blackened to look old - proper beams. The bar counter is very attractive too, possibly beech - I'm no expert.

I do know my beers though, and the Black Sheep Best Bitter was among the best I've had this year, and I bitterly regretted only having a half. (It's not just about staying upright on the bike - there's also the little matter of toilet stops to consider.) I assume that there's a different crowd in the evening, as not a single one of this afternoon crew was drinking real ale. They don't know what they're missing. In the very unlikely event - make that incredibly unlikely - that I find myself owning a house in Kirk Smeaton, I would be absolutely thrilled to have this as my local.
