Under new ownership and as such, this pub no longer opens until midday, despite 11am still published everywhere. The new landlord appears to be a Scottish fellow. He was sporting a Celtic top on my midweek visit.

The exterior looks quite impressive, but inside has been modernised far too much, leaving a fairly characterless interior. One end (to the right as you enter) seems to serve as a dining area, but only other drinkers were present at lunchtime. World Cup cricket was showing on a rather large TV, whilst the left-hand end now houses the pool table and dartboard. I saw no sign of the bar billiards table mentioned in the previous review. Also off to the right-hand side of the building is a beer garden.

Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter is the regular beer. The guest was Adnams Ghost Ship. Real cider appears to have been discontinued too. It's no surprise that the pub no longer features in the Good Beer Guide. Convenient for Wivelsfield station though.

A large pub, with a traditionally decorated exterior giving it a tastefully aged look. The inside is surprisingly spacious (perhaps a little too vast in places?) with a central staple-shaped bar (with some attractive picked colour screens on the gantry). Off to the left is a bar billiards table in full working order and to the right is a newly-opened extension housing a pool table, dart boards and the newly-furbished toilets. Plasma screens were dotted around which on our very quiet Sunday visit were showing motocross, though nobody actually appeared to be following proceedings. Décor is perhaps a little tired in places and maybe a little tasteful brightening-up might not go amiss. The beers were We Valley HPA, Harveys and GK Abbot, with one clip turned. My HPA was in fine fettle as you’d expect from a GBG-listed pub. We settled in the bar billiards area and hogged the table for a couple of hours. Quite nice in that area, with a collection of books/magazines plus some nice individually-lit landscape paintings. Chap behind the bar was friendly and it felt like a nice place to be. Worth seeking out if you like a traditional local pub with good beer and punter-friendly facilities and I’d happily pop in again.

The Water Mill Inn is a stone’s throw from Wivelsfield Railway Station and is open until midnight every night except Friday and Saturday when it is open until 1:00. There is live music every Friday night, poker every Wednesday and a quiz on Thursdays. The bar area is L shaped with a couple of plasma screens and bar billiards. There is a large extension to the right that houses another plasma screen, a pool table and two dartboards. Sky Sports is shown and the Carling Cup semi-final was being watched by a few locals. The bar is stocked with standard draught and two banks of four hand pumps were drawing Cornish Coaster, Harvey’s Best and Summer Lightening with the forth being unused.
There is a grass covered area with some picnic tables to the right of the pub.

The service was friendly and the locals were a good laugh. I liked it in here and would have no problem returning.
