UPDATE: An undressed brick build that looks late Georgian, with beer garden. I remember it when it was a pub in the early 90s, before it was turned into a a restaurant - and it has taken some years to come back after my last visit. There is a restaurant area - packed with diners - so the food can't be bad, but there is also a bar area (although they do serve a bar menu). The bar is an L-shaped room but at least does feel less foody than it did years ago - although it is modern. Sells cocktails now, but, and thankfully, it has 5 real ales: SA Tribute, Doombar, Wainwright - as well as the more exciting Backyard Hoard (nice) and Castle Rock Songbird (also nice). While still more food based, I would come back now to eat as I can have a choice of ales too.

SEP 2009: The old Nelson was a bit run down and shabby and the place has been re-vamped, to the point of being a country wine bar, with pine tables and floor, leather sofas, lit candley things in glass bowls etc

Soulless as a place, but it clearly was popular on the quiz night

140 choices of lagers it seemed, but there was a real ale tap - a bit of a non-descript Robinson's Nosey Parker, but i was happy enough to have half.

Here if you like trendy stuff and own an expensive car, the Malt Shovel around the corner, is far superior, especially if you have a Clio

Stumbled on this place whilst walking the HOEW.

Country Dining added to the signage, presumably after a make over.

Formal restaurant and bar. Bar full of families dining.

5 real ales. Olde Trip was bang average but looked like it might have the potential to be more exciting than the Abbot.

Found the place (eventually) for a Saturday night birthday celebration. It's styled as a pub and eatery and I think the emphasis is on the diner rather than the pub-goer.

The usual tap stuff was offered along with 2 handpulls serving Titanic English Glory and Itchen Valley Green Jacket. Ironically, I sunk the latter more readily.

The service was efficient and friendly, the only other clientele (where we sat in the dining room) were a jovial bunch of sweater wearing bloody nice blokes but inoffensive enough.

It was OK for a meal and, although it's not bad, it's not the sort of place I'd go for an evening's drinking - not least because it's surrounded by long narrow cow-pat-smelling country lanes and I'd need a taxi to get there.
