I always feel a bit pessimistic when visiting large roadside pubs on main holiday routes, especially when I see a children’s playground in the garden, but I’m happy to say I was pleasantly surprised on this occasion. This one has a large carpark, and the garden also has a lawn and a paved patio area with a trendy firepit which apparently the Londoners like. The house itself is Victorian in origin, though it has been greatly extended and renovated. Inside, it’s rambling and has many different levels and seating and dining areas, largely open plan. The extensions have been contrived to show exposed timbers and tiled floors, and it does have a slightly modern rural feel to it, like a barn crammed into a house. There are a couple of open fires, one of which is a large free-standing woodburner which sort of matches the firepit outside. The staff were friendly and professional, and the food was about average in price. Being a Hall and Woodhouse house the 3 ales on draft and the one craft keg beer were all Badger. Badger Best Bitter, Pickled Partridge and Tanglefoot were all in very good condition. It was a pleasant visit and I’d be happy to come back, though I suspect it might get busy during school holidays.
