Blackthorn gives an excellent description of the interior, below, which is a nice surprise given the rather shabby-looking exterior due mainly to its situation by the main road. There is a car park at the back which it shares with neighbouring properties, and there is a children’s play area, past which you walk to gain access via a scruffy-looking back yard which doubles as a smoking area. It’s very nice inside though, comfortable and airy, and there is a warm welcome from the staff, although the two pub dogs – an almost-matching pair of obese white labradors – were somewhat indifferent. Food is good, better-than-average pub grub, slightly high-priced, but freshly cooked and enjoyable. There were two ales on, Cheddar’s Buddle Pit and Butcombe Original, both in very good condition. A decent place to stop for lunch or a few beers.

A good sized pub and hotel just off J22 of the M5, it has been presumably been extended and renovated considerably over the years, and is now quite contemporary in style and it struck me a s being a little bland and corporate, although whether that is actually the case I’m not sure. There was certainly no obvious branding such as you get in many establishments.

Internally it’s divided in to a number of different areas with the main bar being at the front. Other than a few chunky beams on the ceiling and a disused fireplace off to one side, it’s quite contemporary in appearance with laminate wood flooring, trendy modern wallpaper and pine wood panelling on the lower part of the walls. A tier of plates was on the bar displaying a selection of cakes. Off to the left were a few high leather chairs and the hotel lobby, while a separate room off to the right was set up a restaurant, complete with a “Please wait here to be seated” sign outside. We were eating on this occasion, so elected to go in here due to a lack of available tables anywhere else. This too was quite contemporary, although in a cosier sort of way with a mixture of pale khaki and green paintwork and a disused brick fire-place to one side which had also been painted khaki green. It was perhaps lacking much in the way of atmosphere, with just a couple of very bland, generic prints on the walls.

The menu offered an extensive choice of pub grub dishes with options such as burger, fish and chips, pie of the day and so on, with most of the main courses being priced around a tenner. There was also a small specials board, and we both chose from here. A dish of salmon on a bed of stir fried noodles and vegetables was very tasty, whilst a chicken breast with pasta in a creamy mushroom sauce was a decent portion but seemed over-priced at £13.95.

Beers on tap were all fairly local with Cheddar’s Potholer, Bath’s Gem and Butcombe. Ciders meanwhile were also local with Thatcher’s Gold and Thatcher’s Haze. Overall this was somewhat better than I expected, and despite it’s somewhat bland appearance offered a friendly welcome and decent food.
