This is a delightful pub in a beautiful etting, but a bit of a walk from the car park as you need to go over the river bu a footbridge then over the Churnett Valley Herotage Railway via 2 gates. There is a decent range of ales and ciders, and we chose Falstaff Arnott which was fine.

ORIGINAL REVIEW February 2010
One of the most beautiful pub locations anywhere in the UK,overlooking the Caldon Canal and with the Churnet Valley Railway running below the pub garden. The pub building is victorian with bench seating in the bar area and a seperate restaurant area. The ale selection and quality is outstanding and on my visit the Harviestoun Schiehallion and the BrewDog Punk IPA were sublime and led to much quaffing from a thirsty crew.Although we didnt eat,the food looked wholesome and is cooked by a chef,no microwave in sight. On a sunny weekend this pub can get busy but just be patient at the bar and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.I've been into more pubs that I care to mention, and this is place is right up there at the top of the tree.An absolute must visit.Excellent website gives more information.

UPDATE
Spent the evening here and still marvelled at the location. There seems more focus now on real cider with two on handpump and boxes stacked high on a side bar, there must have been a choice of more than 10.Three real ales available with two pumps reversed, and Burton Ale a regular fixture.Guests on my trip Norton English Eleven and Cat Scratched Celt. The pub grub may not be cordon bleu but makes up for it in sheer size, you wont leave feeling hungry. The interior is basic and not helped by having music channel Heart TV on both screen and speaker, the location seems more conducive to background jazz or some such.Popular with locals who drive here ,with the nominated driver on the shandies, and very dog friendly.Chickens peck in the beer garden outside,it's rustic and well worn but worth seeking out.

If you can find Consall, via Consall Lane off the A522, keep your eyes open and just keep following the signs for Consall Forge (No Through Road) you will pick up signs for the Black Lion after a while. The pub car park is at the end of a country lane and on the opposite side of the canal and Churnet Valley Railway track to the pub itself - a bridge and level pedestrian crossing allows access to the pub with a fair number of chickens wandering about in the beer garden at the front that offers a fine view of the railway and canal - I assume deliveries use the same route as the customers? My route was via the Churnett Valley steam Railway from Kingsley and Froghall, getting off at Consall Station and walking with the track 50 yards on my right until we reached the car park.
I found a 3 roomed pub, one of which is designated as a restaurant. Despite its fairly remote location it was quite busy on Saturday afternoon.
Ales on offer included Westgate Brewery Gangly Ghoul (a nice dark ale), Peakstones Rock Black Hole, Murf's Ales Duke of Gloucester, George Stephenson and Diesel 37 (specials brewed for the steam gala).
As the videprinter twitched away on TV, it got dark and the weather outside turned cooler whilst the fire became more enticing. Warning! Once you get settled here you might not want to budge.
