Was the last pub visited on the evening and pretty busy with what seemed like small groups that had been playing sports of the evening rather than someway into a pub crawl. It is a magnificent location and should be a magnificent pub but in spite of generally being OK with Fullers thought the beer choices on hand pump were very limited, lots of operating hand pumps but almost all seemed to be dispensing Pride (never seen four consecutive hand pumps all dispensing the same beer before, as the photo attests). Was expecting to be the best of the SE24 venues, but i enjoyed Bullfinch more (even allowing for the temperature).

The only pub where someone has taken a swing at me,that was around 1982 with my girlfriend (soon to be wife) in tow and was perpetrated by a drunk leaving the pub.He missed, but we left shortly afterward never to return to what in those days was a rough music focussed pub in a dodgy part of town.
All change now under the ownership of Fuller's and all the heritage features have been uncovered leading to the CAMRA Historic Pub of National Importance listing. The external windows are all very impressive, and the hotel part on the higher floors quite grand. The pub sign is totally crass sadly.
You enter into a lounge area with mainly modern furniture but still the ill-fated table near the door !This part of the interior looks undistinguished while there is a large "wait to be seated"dining room where once bands played. The best of the heritage is by turning left through a room divider into the smaller side bar with initially some high tables, then some comfy chairs before a door to the Snug Bar,an area with 6 painted mirrors on a waterfoul theme but sadly lacking appropriate furniture and looking sparse. This snug has it's own bar access and can be hired privately. There are columns to admire in this side bar and a very good bar back.
However this pub does feel under the control of a pubco. and it doesn't celebrate it's heritage features. There was a poor selection of real ale on my trip with just Fuller's London Pride,Small Beer and Seafarers (dull,NBSS 2.5,£5.30) with taps for ESB and Wild River reversed.Look in both bars for the full selection just in case .Food was expensive with a median main £19 and burgers £17 and it's card only .The area has gentrified and there were lots of families and babies in buggies, but it all feels very corporate where nobody really cares.Pop in to see the heritage then take your custom elsewhere.

Popped in last week with 30mins to kill, stupidly tapped for a pint of Wild River without looking, couldn't believe it when I saw the dr to my account, £6.35!!! And it was off, had to change for Pride which was the only other thing available. So, 8 or 9(?) pumps across the two bars but only Pride and an expired Wild River - lazy, unimaginative and ridiculously overpriced. No point in looking good if the basics are so mis-managed.
