No longer GK, this place would seem to date from the mid-18th century, rebuilt in the 19th and once the haunt of dandy highwaymen; it overlooks wind and rainswept Blackheath (Bleakheath?), so don’t come here for the view.
Home to Hendogate (see WhatPub), it’s bare boarded, with natural wood or grey wainscoting, shades of grey colour scheme with a soupçon of bare brick; furniture is conventional, mixed with some tall stuff, décor by way of pictures of edible wildlife; there’s also a defibrillator. Customers were affluent locals, varied in age, including a gaggle of scantily clad young blonde woman, a decent soundtrack all making for good surroundings.
A surprisingly wide cask selection comprised an unused pump, a reversed Thornbridge clip, Tribute (reversed), Thornbridge Brother Rabbit, Hare of the Dog (GK), Five Points XPA and Southwark’s Session IPA, £2.90 a half and good, served by a very friendly barman.
This isn’t a destination pub as such, but hands down it’s the best option in SE3.

Unbranded Greene King pub in a good position south of the common but still close to the station and 'village' shops. Given a semi-rustic makeover at some stage, with three distinct seating / dining areas (one raised by a couple of steps). For an alehouse-style operation, it was no surprise to see an impressive row of ten handpumps, but less welcome was finding just two of those being clipped. This meant just the 'house' Hare of the Dog (£4.35) and Über Brew from Old Dairy plus a few craft keg beers.

Not much has changed since the previous reviewer's visit some three years ago. I didn't see any of my bugbear tall tables/tall stools now, but everything else looks much the same. The area down at the far end has tables all laid for diners, and the dissected drawing of a cow is still on the wall on the raised area on the right. One apparently new thing is the mass of photographs of dogs, with their names of course, on the walls in the corner just past the servery. I guess it must be dog friendly then, with dog walkers popping in for a swift one with their furry friends after a walk on the heath.

The ale selection is still quite good, especially for a Greene King pub. GK IPA was available of course, plus "Hare Ale" which is indoubtedly GK Hanson & Hardy Bitter. But they also had on Southwark Bankside Blonde, the Kent Brewery pair of Red Top and Uber Brew, plus Twickenham Naked Ladies coming soon. Unfortunately we suffered a similar experience to the previous reviewer, with the Red Top being in very poor condition. Maybe we were just unlucky, possibly like the previous reviewer.

Despite the poor quality ale, I still quite liked this pub, and would be happy to give it another go if in the area again.
