Despite the Carvery tag on the outside, this is very much an old-school Irish-run boozer in a nice large Brewer's Tudor building. Four areas are arranged round the central bar, with mostly tables at the front and sofas round behind the bar. The larger back room is the actual carvery part, when it is open. The interior is traditionally furnished and decorated with odd Irish knick-knacks, while a few TV screens show different sports. Sadly the only ale on offer was Doom Bar, and that in a pretty poor condition. The place could be restored to a cracking pub with minimal effort, but is probably more likely to be gutted or demolished at some point, which would be a shame.

This pub seems largely unchanged since Roger's visit a few years ago. But the ale selection is not quite as good - or perhaps more accurately it's even poorer. There are still three handpumps, but only one was clipped, for the ubiquitous Doom Bar, at £1.95 a half, although it was in excellent condition. It's still branded as a pub and carvery, with a large area at the back on the left set aside for diners, with a lectern doing sentry duty at its entrance. There was no-one in there mid-afternoon on Wednesday afternoon; I didn't see a menu; and the self-service counter was devoid of food. No doubt we visited at the wrong time for food.

The main bar area is at the front of course, still divided in two by a wall, but with a doorway allowing movement between the two rooms. At the back on the right is a small room dominated by a couple of massive sofas, as well as having a single small round table and chairs. The main bar area has more sofas plus some normal tables and chairs. The fielded paneling on the walls look like original inter-war fittings, but the latticed windows look like modern replacements. The brewer's Tudor exterior is complemented by brown painted beams on the ceilings inside. I saw a "beer garden" advertised but didn't explore it.

This is a landmark traditional old pub. There were only a handfull of customers when we visited on Wednesday afternoon, but hopefully gets busier at the weekends or evenings. It's comfortable enough inside, and would be a winner with a couple of decent ales on.

I have had a few sporadic visits to the White Hart over the years and seem to have a different experience every time. Last year I found a particularly run down pub with no customers and clearly on its last legs so it was no surprise to hear that it subsequently closed down. Fast forward to March this year and the pub has now reopened after a bit of a facelift with “Pub and Carvery” now subheaded on the exterior signage.

The large and spacious mock Tudor interior remains unchanged in layout and fortunately most of the original features (paneling, fireplaces and lattice windows) have remained intact. There are 4 or 5 discernable areas around a central bar albeit mostly knocked through into one. The main bar area at the front was clearly 2 separate rooms at one stage and are still separated by long removed doorway. Behind the right hand section is a cosy half paneled lounge area with a few sofas and coffee tables. The left hand side of the bar leads to a large dining area with its own food bar and at the rear is a beer garden that is more of a functional patio than anything overly picturesque but has potential. Overall the place does seem a lot tidier, fresher and more cared for.

One improvement is definitely the beers. On my previous visit I was faced with a couple of hand pump badged with courage Best to be told that they were for display purposes only! I’m pleased to report that the 3 current pumps are functioning albeit with a not too exciting (but better than other pubs in the area) selection of Doom Bar, Old Speckled Hen and Spitfire (albeit the latter had the dreaded available soon label affixed). My Doom Bar was OK and at £3.30 about par for the course.

There wasn’t an abundance of customers albeit my early evening call was hardly peak period so I cannot tell how successful the transformation has been. Eltham is generally devoid of decent pubs (the Park Tavern being the big exception) and the White Hart will hardly leave you with a massive urge to come rushing back but it is one of the best of a bad bunch and certainly a vast improvement on my last visit.
