This pub dates from the early 1920s, and was built to service the Bellingham estate. The exterior bears the much loved “brewer’s Tudor” wooden beams that is so often a feature of pubs from this time. Inside it still retains its (at least) two-room format, although when I visited on Saturday afternoon only the Saloon Bar on the right was open for use. This room was a bit of a throwback – carpeted, grubby banquettes, small stools, some standard but mismatched chairs, and some clean wooden and small metal framed tables. The walls are three quarter height wood panelled, with some relatively poor quality wood panelling. There’s a pool table at the back, TVs around the place showing the racing on Saturday afternoon, and numerous games machines.
This is a simple pub in a not very salubrious area, and seems to be a classic case of preservation by poverty, as it doesn’t look as if anyone has thought it worth spending any serious money on in the last 80 years. It is very likely to be included on CAMRA’s London Heritage Inventory.
The only ale on was GKIPA (£2.60 a pint), and I’m not surprised to say that I didn’t see any sign of food. This pub is worth visiting if you want to see a classic unspoilt suburban inter-war pub, but to be honest I reckon that that is probably the only reason to visit.
