An old coaching inn which has done well to have kept a bit of rural character. Long and narrow front-facing bar, with a room off left and a neat courtyard to the right. Pleasingly busy on a Saturday evening, no spare tables inside. Cask choices were a Cornish-heavy line-up of Tribute, Proper Job, Doom Bar and a welcome Northern interloper in Bass, which was in decent shape (NBSS 3) – GBG’24 listed. Loads of ciders as well. Didn’t quite get the opportunity to fully enjoy the place but I was certainly quite happy with what I got. 7.5

A pleasant and traditional pub on the very edge of Long Ashton, it’s equally handy for anybody using the Ashton Court estate as it is for the local villagers, although I suspect most of the former probably use the more prominent Ashton, which would be a shame as this is a really great pub.

It’s divided in to a number of different rooms internally, all with a traditional country pub feel to them. There are some large black beams on the ceiling with the obligatory horse brasses, and a real log fire was roaring away which was a nice touch on a chilly evening. Flooring is a mixture of wood strip and blue tartan carpet. A “parlour” off to the left was perhaps more intended for dining, and there looked to be a further room at the rear although we did not investigate this. A snug to the right (the “Smoke Room”) was very cosy and had another coal fire going, whilst a number of old black and white photographs of the surrounding areas were on the walls. There is also a courtyard garden at the rear.

The menu offered a decent selection of “pub grub” dishes such as ham egg & chips, fish & chips, sausage & mash, etc., as well as several burgers, and these were mostly priced somewhere in the £8 - £10 range. We opted for the Steak, port, stilton & mushroom pie and a chicken, bacon & tarragon pie and these were really both very good indeed. Proper hearty pub fayre.

Beers on tap were Butcombe Gold, Bass, Tribute and Doom Bar, whilst ciders were Thatcher’s Gold and Blackthorn. All in all, a great pub and well worth a visit.
