Not much to add to Steve C's description below. The pub was built in the early 19th Century and first licensed in 1858. Originally having associations with the now-defunct Gaiety Theatre which stood nearby, the bar on the right used to be called The Gaiety Lounge, it has been known as meeting place for the gay community for several years. No real ale, really bad karaoke and a clientele with whom I have little in common mean I won't be making this a regular stop, but it is an historic pub so is worth drooping in for that reason alone.

The Ship Inn has a fairly long frontage and is a short walk to the train station.
Once inside the pub has two separate rooms,i had a drink in the room to the right which is L shaped, this room is carpeted and has normal tables and chairs for seating, there is a larger room to the left which was in darkness.
I was'nt expecting any real ale here,so i was surprised to see a pump clip with Doom Bar on it,this was a decent enough drink.
Background music was playing on early Saturday evening visit, the pub was fairly busy with a group of locals.
This pub is probably a bit too rough to attract any tourists who are in the area.

The left hand side of the Ship Inn consists of a dance floor with DJ booth and the right hand side of the pub is where the L shaped bar is located. I didn’t spot any sports advertised and the two plasma screens were showing music videos when I visited just after lunch last Saturday. There were only four other customers and two of these were geezer birds that were playing the extremely loud quiz machine. I spotted an advertisement on the wall for the live entertainment that evening which was a drag act which isn’t my cup off tea to be honest. There were some newspapers on the bar that is stocked with standard draught products and the friendly barman served me a decent Guinness. Food is advertised outside, but I spotted no menus or chalk boards inside and nobody was eating.
More up my street would be the weekly Monday night quiz, but I cannot see myself returning to this pub in future.
