Bucking Fastard left this review about The Queens Head

This is a 500 year old building and next door is called The Queens Head Stables, these days it's operated by the pub as B&B accomodation. The pub has low ceilings, exposed timbers and an irregular flag stone floor in what is essentially an open plan lounge. The section to the left at the front has a flat screen(off), a sofa with low table and a serving hatch, while the rest of the decor is traditional with wooden furniture and an open fireplace at the front, which hadn't quite sparked into life on my trip. The bar is situated in the middle of the building to the left side, while the kitchen and loos are to the rear. The gents has a collection of saucy seaside prints and has been recently upgraded. On the way to the car park, there is an outside terrace for good weather drinking.
The interior colour scheme is in best Farrow and Ball ,but the overall affect is a little sterile and the initially loud muzak could have caused an unwanted distraction had the barmaid not thoughfully turned down the volume and switched tracks to 80's classics which ,as the only customer in on a cold midweek lunchtime, gets my vote.
Listed in the GBG,I was surprised this Fuller's tied house only had two of their ales available in Seafarer and London Pride (£3.50,in good nick)from the four handpumps, although this may be because of visiting on a quiet day early in the week. There is a space on a beam for a guest ale description,so I may have been unlucky.
Food is served everyday 12-2 and 6-9 (Sunday 12-4)from a short menu with sandwiches £4-£5,mains £8.50-£12.50 .The sarnies were well made with a fresh salad dressing.I suspect food is a major driver here, with occasional themed food night.Proper cooking rather than microwaving is employed here. However there is also a pub quiz on Tuesdays.
Despite the corporate feel, this is still a pleasant village pub with a friendly welcome from behind the bar.A wider choice of Fullers ales would have resulted in a higher rating, especially if one of their interesting seasonals had been available.
