A traditional pub that 30 years back was probably quite upmarket but now feels like it's in gentle decline. Enter to a semi-divided 70s feel refit bar with faded pub carpet, some bare stone walls, random ships wheel, black and white beamed ceiling and an inglenook fireplace with a modern wood burning stove which obviously hasn’t quite done the job as the place smelt quite badly of damp. Part of the left-hand side is raised up a step and features a ship's wheel and a dart board. To the rear is a surprisingly large garden. One hidden pump with, oddly, a mild on (Hillside) which was fair and some of the locals were on it, which I perhaps found even more surprising. A few punters in with a bit of banter flying around and I started to warm to place a bit as time went on, despite its faults. 5.5

Thought to date back to the 1700’s, the Plough is not too far to stroll from the town centre but is for the most part very much a locals pub.

The single room carpeted bar is semi-divided into front and rear sections by remants of a dividing wall. The interior has an element of character with low beamed ceilings and a fine inglenook fireplace by the main entrance. The décor includes brasses, pump clips and old pictures and an upright jukebox acts as a centerpiece near the bar. The front section contained a quite intrusive dartboard although it was getting plenty of usage during my visit. Others were locked into games of cards or general socializing and I got the impression that this is a very active community style pub where everyone knows everyone else although they certainly weren’t unwelcoming to strangers.

The beers weren’t too exciting with a range of standard products and Doom Bar (£2.80) as only ale which I almost missed as it was hidden behind a flower arrangement on the bar but luckily the eagle eyed landlord correctly assumed I was looking for a hand pump before I opted for a lesser choice.

To be honest it’s not somewhere that has anything to tempt anyone from the touristy parts of town but the place was vibrant enough and the locals seemed happy with their lot.
