Michael Wright's review is thorough and still current, The Golden Lion was an enjoyable venue for an impromptu family lunch. To me, the most notable aspect is the warm welcome, despite it being a busy Bank Holiday. In addition the food is good, although by no means cheap, and the beer (from the nearby Suthwyk Brewery) was as fresh as you could wish for.

It seems that the back yard once housed a brewery, and the building itself now houses a small brewing museum and off-licence, the latter with a large selection of bottles, primarily from the south of England, but with a small Belgian range as well. Draught Suthwyk ale is a further reason to wander in.

Definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in the area.

Thankyou Michael for the review (this is Jane the landlady) just one correction!!! there is disabled access down the side of the building as there is a door from the pathway in the garden that comes out between the lounge and the dining room so anyone wobbly on their pins welcome.

A pub with a historic past, D day landings were planned from nearby Southwick House, Eisenhower & Monty drank in here, as did many an invasion planner no doubt

The pub has had an extensive refurb over the past 14 months, not always by choice but by woodworm, nicotine and general aging. The result is very pleasant, and has revealed some treasures such as an ingle nook fireplace. Pub reopened 2009.

There are two entrances, one from rear & one from High Street, both involve steps of some type, so be warned if not too steady on your pins, The rear entrance, via car park, may be easier for wheelchairs or Zimmer frames, but does involved a small bit of a cobbled area

As public transport is minimal, weekend buses for instance cease at around noon on Saturday, a car, bike, walk or taxi may be best, there is a large car park at the rear, follow signs for "Southwick Brewhouse", there is free on street parking, on the High Street at the front, spaces may be problematic at busy periods

On entering from High Street one has to turn left because the right hand door, to restaurant area, is deliberately locked, I assume to give privacy to diners. Turning left leads to a kind of L shaped "Public bar", but not spit & sawdust. There are bar stools, and plenty of "farmhouse rustic" tables & chairs

The general decor throughout the pub is wartime memorabilia, ships crests, Dig for Victory posters etc. Given the historic provenance of this pub it is as should be expected, and possibly worth going for, but it is not overdone, and speaking with the landlady she is well aware that it can become too much and is at pains to avoid this

Now down to the essentials of a pub, what a great surprise in a small two pub village, 5 hand pulls, all of ales it is unlikely you have drank before. Lovely to see mainly local breweries supported, including the Southwick Brewhouse which is literally just outside in the car park [blatant plug, open to public, free admission, off sales available]

On my visit there was Skew Sunshine, Fossil Fuel, Liberation, Old Dick & Addlestone draught cider. If you really do not prefer real ales or cider then keg beers & lagers are also available

Going through the main bar area the pub is sort of U shaped, with main bar on one leg, and a more intimate, and smaller bar on other leg of the U, the restaurant is accessed via this smaller bar

Toilets, clean and tidy, are out the back, literally, so you may get a bit wet if it is raining, but it is all "atmosphere" and for a really old pub not unexpected, do not let this put you off, it really is not too far a dash from back door to loo

I took some more photos earlier, and was spotted by landlady. As I entered pub she asked if I had what I wanted, I declared interest in Pubs Galore and asked if OK to take more photos inside, she was agreeable to this, and offered background to refurb etc, I do not think this was linked to my PuG declaration, she, and all staff were polite and efficient

I never tried the food, but it looked lovely, and there were many eating

I can however only give 9 out of ten as food not tried and possible access problems for less able. But do try it, I am sure you will not be disappointed

Would I go back, most certainly
