An attractive looking stone built pub in this small village, we initially had some trouble finding it as it’s not at all obvious from the “main” road through the village, but once we had persevered, we found a good-sized car park and a friendly welcome, not least from the pub dog, although that was really a little over-friendly. Jumping up on your table, trying to lick your face and drink your pint is really a bit much.

Internally it doesn’t have quite the “olde worlde” charm that one might expect from the outside, presumably having suffered from sone renovation at some point. Not there’s anything at all wrong with it, it’s just not as traditional as I had anticipated. Although it didn’t obviously strike me as a gastro-pub, most of the tables were laid up for food, although as it was a nice day we decamped to the adjacent courtyard and there were also padded stools lined up along the bar counter. The majority of the flooring is some sort of parquet wood, with slate tiles around the bar and some fitted carpet in places. Walls were predominantly cream plasterwork, although there was the odd glimpse of exposed stone walling in places which presumably would have been all over the pub at one point. A snug to the front had some old wood panelling on the walls which looked quite elegant, whilst elsewhere the timberwork was painted duck egg blue. Various accoutrements were dotted around such as vases of flowers, candle sticks and so on.

Beers on tap were Butcombe Rare Breed plus Uley’s Bitter and Old Spot, whilst a fourth pump appeared unused. Ciders meanwhile were Thatcher’s Gold, Cornish Orchard’s Gold and Iford New Tradition.
