About
Homegrown Sally pork is back! This time however it hasn’t been grown in our Walled Garden in Ham but in our chef’s orchard in Swanley, less than two miles away from the Sally. Whilst this may not be Ham from Ham, this Swine From Swanley is going to taste just as good. Our chef Jo and her husband Simon have been raising this small batch of Gloucestershire Old Spots on a diet of sow nuts and apples from their orchard since autumn last year. The pigs were born in Berkeley, again less than two miles from the Sally, so they really are about as local as you can get. As we’ve mentioned before the Gloucestershire Old Spot breed originated in the Berkeley Vale and was known as ‘the orchard pig’ with the spots said to be bruises from all the apples falling on them. It is fitting therefore that these pigs have been raised in a Berkeley Vale orchard but even more fitting that the orchard is in Swanley – a hamlet historically known as ‘Swinely’ because of its association pig rearing. If you haven’t tried our homegrown Gloucestershire Old Spot pork before, we heartily recommend you do so and quick, because this won’t last long. This is not your normal supermarket, commercial breed, fast-grown, fast-fed pork. This is hand-reared, slow-grown, apple-fed Gloucestershire Old Spot pork which produces the most succulent, juicy and flavoursome pork we have ever eaten. This Homegrown Chops and Chips Night is the first opportunity to try Chef Jo’s Swine From Swanley and we promise this will be the finest chops, chips and apple sauce you will have ever try all for £12.95. As ever, we won’t be taking bookings or reserving tables and food will start being served at 6.30pm with orders from 5pm. Make sure you don’t miss it!
