About Kid Fonque

Kid Fonque has become one of South Africa’s key tastemaker DJs, from his work managing the country’s premier dance music label Soul Candi and the development of his #2sidesofthebeat events and compilations, he now commands a huge listenership on his weekly Selective Styles radio show on 5fm, one of SA’s biggest stations, providing a platform to Africa’s more leftfield, alterative music producers.

Likened to peers such as Gilles Peterson in the way he has pushed the boundaries and enlightened audiences in South Africa, Kid Fonque’s Stay True Sounds label has set a benchmark for underground quality, giving upcoming artists such as Daev Martian, Sio and FKA Mash, their first significant releases

In the studio, his jazz-tinged, dance floor productions such as ‘Be’ and ‘2Sides’ on Atjazz’s ARCo label and the hugely successful crossover hit ‘Usangikhumbula’ with infamous rapper Okmalumkoolkat, lit up MTV Africa and put his name on the international map.

2018 sees Kid Fonque team up with UK underground legend D-Malice e on an album project for London’s R2 Records under the name rkls (pron. reckless) – a downtempo, beat-driven collection of tracks harking back to the 90s and featuring the cream of SA’s next generation songwriters and rappers.
