Multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and DJ, Adam Gibbons (aka Lack of Afro) is back in considerable style with ‘Hello Baby’ – his fifth studio record and the first Lack of Afro album to be released on his own LOA Records imprint.
Described as ‘having a knack for finding great vocal collaborations’, the bar has been raised again here! Featuring a stellar cast of guest vocalists including Grammy-award winner Joss Stone, steam-punk legend Professor Elemental & arguably the most talented young soul singer in the UK today in Elliott Cole, ‘Hello Baby’ is a genre-bending colossus of an album that is packed full of Adam’s trademark multi-instrumental goodness, heavy drums, percussion-packed production, and ear for a good tune.
Also featured on the record is soul singer Juliette Ashby (who featured heavily in the recent Oscar-winning ‘Amy’ documentary) – Californian rapper, regular Lack of Afro collaborator (and one half of The Damn Straights) Herbal T, and rising star of the northern soul / mod scene, dancer, model & vocalist Emma Noble.
He has enjoyed consistent success with his Lack of Afro moniker, releasing his first album, Press On in the autumn of 2007. It was picked up on by some of the most respected names in the scene. Bonobo, Mark Lamarr and Craig Charles all rated it very highly, not surprising when tunes like Roderigo and the near classic The Outsider had blazed across dance floors all over Europe. With elements of Funk, Soul and Jazz blended with tight breaks and Adam’s distinctive production, Press On proved irresistible and won him many plaudits.
He built on this acclaim with the release of My Groove Your Move in 2009, dispelling any talk of ‘the difficult second album’. The release of the album This Time in 2011 saw Lack of Afro continuing to work with Wax & Herbal T (making the huge track “P.A.R.T.Y” that was subsequently used by Footlocker & Addias for a worldwide ad campaign) & in 2012 Lack of Afro released a two-disc Remixes & Rarities album which featured his take on tracks by the likes of Kraak & Smaak & The Hot 8 Brass Band.
2012 also saw a new project come to life, under the moniker The Unity Sextet, an all-instrumental jazz and hip-hop-inspired affair. The Unity Sextet LP came out in January 2012 and features Adam on various instruments with contributions from a host of musicians, including pianist George Cooper & saxophonist Charlie Hearnshaw. This album pricked up the ears of many tastemakers and fans alike, including Jamie Cullum and Mark Lamarr (BBC Radio 2). Less than a year later, Adam followed this with the next phase of The Unity Sextet project, a solo album by Fat Thumbs Ronnie, (the keyboard player in the fictional band) entitled Time To Shine.
His fifth long player, Music For Adverts followed in 2014, cementing his reputation as one of the hardest working musicians around. Featuring the instant (and long sold-out) soul classic Recipe For Love, the album went on to be the most successful Lack of Afro album to date, reaching the top 10 on the iTunes Soul & R&B charts in over 9 countries and going top 5 in 4 others. Following the success of that album, Adam set up his own label, LOA Records, with numerous artists being signed worldwide.
Away from the studio, Adam’s music has been much in demand in TV, Film and Advertising, with directors including Steven Soderbergh and companies including Disney, HBO, Sony Pictures, Adidas & Miller Lite all using the Lack of Afro sound for successful projects and campaigns. More recently Lack of Afro tracks have been featured on compilations from Universal and Sony Music.
