Oakes Barn, Bury St. Edmunds

Smallish barn conversion on the edge of the centre, smart but comfortable. Beams exposed in the roof. Good beer and friendly

A slightly weird place to find in the middle of a town, looking as if it would be more at home in some rustic garden centre. However, the older eponymous building, more modern single storey extension and compact courtyard seating area are well done. All six handpumps were working, with a decent selection including the Sir Roger's Porter from Earl Soham Brewery (£3.30).

This is an odd place, it looks like the bar area at the end is very old and that it has had a modern extension added to it making it a rectangular room with a small bar area at the far end. It has a wooden floor and a mix of seating. The bar has seven hand pumps which had one unused, Oakham JHB, Adnam's Bitter, Grain Slate, ThreeOneSix & Redwood and Buffy's Norwegian Blue. I went for the Adnam's (£3.00) which was in excellent condition. This one is GBG 2017 listed and well worth a visit.
