The Red Lion, Evesham

Revisit, where I must have reviewed this pub with a different account, as I cannot edit. I think you could log in with facebook and/or your email and I obviously changed approach. Anyway - in addition to my terrible spelling mistake from last time (thrills, indeed), there is a lot to admire here. Hung Drawn and Portered is still on but I tried an interesting Teme Valley Green Hopped Beer to be seasonal. What I really liked was the little A5 flyer showing the entertainment options coming. Open Mic, Folk evenings to be expected but I loved the regular coach trips to surrounding local good beer pubs and breweries. I wish my locals did more of this sort of thing. Worth visiting.

After an absence of over 7 years, we returned to Evesham on Friday lunchtime to try this small pub in the corner of the town's Market Square. We arrived to find the brewer delivering more ales and cider, but the place wasn't open until 2pm. With only 15 minutes to wait, we decided to hang around and were not disappointed. This is just my kind of pub. It's a really down-to-earth, cosy pub with really friendly staff and locals, along with a decent selection of local ales and real cider. 3 boxes of real cider had been delivered. So my wife had the choice of which one to open. Farmer Jim's Sweet Cider, Rootin' Tootin' & Apple Red were the options. She chose the former. Apparently locals prefer the Apple Red, probably due to its 8.4% ABV! Ales are from a couple of local breweries, with the same owner - Cannon Royall Flintlock Bitter, Fletch & Owd Ale & White Rabbit Old Bertram. At 7.3% the Old Bertram stout was an excellent beer. Really good pub that I must go back to one day when in the area again.

This 2018 CAMRA Good Beer Guide pub is a very friendly pub in the market square with a few tables outside with welcome umbrellas given the heat this summer. Lovely cosy feel inside the pub, and a good selection of Cannon Royall beers on the bar. We enjoyed the Blonde Bombshell and Foxy Lady.

This has been closed as pub for 100 years, before reopening in 2014. It had quite a few of the canon royalle brewery range on but I went for a simply superb North Cotswold Brewery Hung, Drawn and Quartered. It may well be pint of the year. An old building situated in Evesham's historic market square. The pub's been well described and feels very traditional inside with ageing fixtures and fittings and the bar ceiling hung with hops. It's a friendly welcome here both from behind the bar and from the characterful regulars. If you're looking for a real pub atmosphere laced with light banter then this is the place although apparently things may become slightly heated if discussion turns to religion or politics so these thorny subjects are perhaps best left alone. Beer on was mainly from the Cannons Royall stable: Teddy Bear, Evesham's Choice, Black Coffee, Sultry Siren and Paddington with Holden's Golden Glow on as the sole guest. The Cannons Royall beers ranged from 3.8 to 4.3 in strength and we couldn't really tell the difference between those that we tried but nothing stood out as exceptional. That said, this is still probably the best spot for a beer in Evesham. Not a destination pub but well worth a visit if in town.

The exterior view of this pub is dominated by a very poor shop front extension with a flat roof,probably stuck on pre WWII and it obscures a fine old building.You enter into the pub on a large plinth with a dropdown to the older part of the pub where there are fine exposed timbers and a low ceiling.There is a three sided bar serving an open plan interior with a quiet seating area in front of a brick fireplace at the rear.The seating in the front shop extension part is popular with the locals who create a solid boozer atmosphere,despite sitting in an area more akin to a coffee shop;I agree it does have the vibe of a micro pub. Four ciders and perrys were available from either handpumps or boxes on the bar,while the real ale offering was a selection of Cannon Royall brews with a sole guest of Holdens Golden Glow on my visit.I managed the three pint test on Evesham Choice and a pint of Paddington but found the ale a bit unexciting and samey .Given the paucity of quality real ale in Evesham ,this was a safe bolt hole. As the evening wore on ,the banter got more lively and amusing ,it was very easy to feel at home in here.At the weekends we were told by the friendly barmaid that the pub gets very lively and a little boisterous but in an old school boozer way.This pub is the complete opposite of a gastro pub,with some genuine characters among the regulars and for me that alone make the pub worthy of a revisit when next in town.

This is a small Olde Worlde looking pub from the outside and much the same inside. It has a low ceiling with beams and an Island bar set on a slightly raised area to the right. It comes close to being a micropub as there are no TVs, music or fruit machines that I could see and I saw no evidence of mainstream spirits being sold. The sticking point is three mainstream keg dispensers on the side of the bar one of which was Carling. There was a fair crowd of locals in on my Saturday afternoon visit. The bar has eight hand pumps with two devoted to cider and the rest Cannon Royall beers. These were Fruiterer's Mild, Evesham's Choice, Comfortably Stout, Black Coffee, Blond Bombshell and Lite Lady. I tried three of these and would call them underwhelming rather than bland and tasteless. All were priced at £2.80 and the Fruiterer's Mild was the best followed by the Evesham's Choice (probably a re-badged standard beer) and the Blond Bombshell. The mild was a typical one from the Midlands as were the bitters. I found all three to be fairly old school but that's what a lot of people like. Personally I would have liked to see something outside the 3.7% to 4.3% ABV range and a more generous use of hops in the beer. I thought this was easily the best pub visited in Evesham (a poor town for pubs IMO) and would gladly make a return visit.
