Meathook, Partick, Glasgow

This place only opened about five years ago, on the ground floor of a newly constructed block of residential flats, but since then it has already gone by several different names. With so many long established pubs nearby, it’s difficult to see why another one was built at all, and it’s certainly not one of the better drinking options in the vicinity. Its current incarnation has a bar/diner, rather than a traditional pub, atmosphere. There is a small area reserved specifically for diners, in addition to the large lounge, although food is served throughout. The seating consists mostly of sofas around low tables, although there are half a dozen bar stools at the counter. Subtle lighting and unobtrusive music add to the “living room” ambience. The toilets are downstairs in what looks like (and might originally have been) the basement of the block of flats. There are a few seats outdoors looking on to Partick Cross. Considering that there are so many other pubs around, prices are anything but competitive, with a pint of Summer Lightning costing me £4.40. Bitter and Twisted is also served from a hand pump and Tennent’s, Carling, Staropramen and St. Mungo lagers, Guinness and Belhaven Best are also available.
