The Foundry, Canterbury

My visit was short, Sunday lunchtime, had to tell them they opened at 12, so they did, but seemed very unwelcoming and cold atmosphere. I only went for the beer range, local brew etc. I guess if in Canterbury go just to see it, but from personal perspective & experience there are better pubs nearby

A new broom in the rather staid world of Canterbury pubs. Just off the tourist throngs in the High Street, past a student pub and into a post industrial backland. A sturdy Victorian brick workshop at right angles to the street formerly part of the Bigglestone’s and Dury engineering works, suppliers of lampposts to the empire. Two rooms, a ground floor reminiscent of a Victorian schoolroom, with glimpses of the brewing kit to the rear, together with a mezzanine level with a scattering of comfy chairs. Our visit was fairly early on a damp October Saturday lunchtime: a varied clientele, but with a preponderance of the middle aged. The barmaid told me that as the day ages, the customers get younger,and a nightclub atmosphere prevails, at least upstairs. As is only right in a city with three universities. The space rapidly filled up with a balanced mix of diners and drinkers. For me ,the main attraction is the range of beers produced by the microbrewery, under the name of the Canterbury Brewers. These beers have rapidly gained a strong local following, and I have enjoyed several bottles of Foundry Torpedo at home. Unfortunately, this was unavailable on our visit, but the two beers I did try ,LocoIPA and Streetlight Porter were excellent, in the modern idiom. The food offering, likewise is developing a good reputation: my pork pie was definitely up to scratch. We enjoyed our visit, and would definitely return.
