Sheffield Tap, Sheffield

It's been over 12 years since my last visit to the Sheffield Tap. This is still one of the better station pubs in the country. It was not quite how I remembered it, as I think I was confusing it with the York Tap, which I rate as slightly better. Thornbridge still have a fair presence on the bar here, but this is also now the site of the Tapped (Sheffield) Brewery. Cask ales were Kelham Island Easy Rider, Thornbridge Jaipur & Lucaria Ice Cream Porter, Thornbridge/Salopian Kashpur, Shiny Rocky, North Riding Citra Pale, Hawkshead Bitter, Tapped Jericho & Toha & Oakham Bishop's Farewell. The cider was Lilley's Apple & Blackberry. There is also a good craft beer selection and a decent bottle/can choice. I assume you can take these away for your train journey. The main bar area is an impressive tiled affair with a high ceiling. There are a few smaller rooms off here. Our choice of seating was the outdoor area adjoining the street, which in hindsight was not the most relaxing we could have chosen. Whilst the pub is on Platform 1 of the station, it can only be accessed from the street. Bouncers were on the door, as there was a football match on (coincidentally). A good station pub, especially handy if you depart or arrive by this means (strikes permitting).

Lovely interior and exterior here at this conveniently located pub adjoined to the station. Was quite busy when I visited on a Saturday night whilst awaiting my next train. Several hand pumps on offer here. Shame the bouncer was quite rude and eager to escort people out who were having a few drinks. Well worth a visit though whilst waiting for you're next train.

Straight off the train and straight in here, a great looking place and just what the doctor ordered after my four hour journey here was extended another hour and twenty minutes due to delays. Plenty of beers to choose from, I had a pint of Vocation Heart & Soul waiting on the table thanks to Will Larter who was paitiently waiting for me, This was followed swiftly by a Roosters Buckeye, both in good nick. A great place to begin and end a tour of the city.

King’s Cross has Platform 9¾ where you can be transported to a place of magical enchantment. Sheffield's Platform 1b is where you enter an enchanting world of grand Victoriana in what was once the 1st class lounge, transformed into a top-quality station bar in 2009; the tiling is especially attractive and along with the interior, is well documented below. I opted on recommendation, for the Great Heck Voodoo Mild at £1.75 the half, which is on the steep side by Sheffield’s standards and was a little cold, but this is preferable to being too warm; it was in great shape and a perfect introduction to the pubbery that was to follow. A must-visit if you arrive by train, as you can’t really miss it.

My first visit to this fine station bar as it was the meeting point for the recent Pubs Galore visit to Sheffield. A very good multi-roomed heritage interior as well described below, the ale pumps had beers from Thornbridge, Arbour, Great Heck, Roosters, Hensley Brewing and Neptune Brewery alongside a couple from the in house brewery. A few of the crawl members were not too enamoured with the quality of their ale choices but my Great Heck Voodoo Mild was very good for me and I really enjoyed my first time visit to this fine station bar.
