The Railway, Manchester

The Railway is a Holt’s pub that looks like a shop conversion from the left, but the right-hand view reveals that it is in fact a proper pub. There’s seating in the windows either side of the central entrance and the bar counter runs up the left facing seating to the right. At the rear is some open plan seating where a television for airing Sky Sports resides. The sound was in competition with the background music in the bar area. This is a small and basic pub, but the cask options were better than most of this chain’s pubs with Bitter, Two Hoots (decent) and Fools Gold being available. I’m not sure that I’d go out of my way to revisit, but the service was polite and beer good so I’d pop back if passing.

Traditional Holts (do they come in any other flavour). Holts bitter in fine condition. Separate rooms, partitioned off.

A decent enough Holts pub. Open plan with little snugs to the right as you enter and a tiny area to the left. The rear of the pub is a small lounge like area. 7 handpumps on the bar with Holts beers on most and the others for guest ales and cider.

The Railway is a smallish pub that is opposite the Metropolitan and in west didsburys small shopping area. Once inside i went in the room at the front which was fairly smart and comfortable,i think there was another room towards the rear of the pub. This pub is a Joseph Holts tied house and there were two real ales on the bar i had a drink of Holts bitter and this was a very nice drink the other beer was Holts mild. This was more of a locals pub and i was quite happy having a drink in here. Pub visited 27/10/2006
