The Cross Keys (JD Wetherspoon), Beverley

Historic pub given a upmarket Wetherspoon makeover, with plush furniture and decor in most of the seating / dining areas throughout the partly opened-out interior (with just the bar area given a simpler, more modern treatment). Reasonable selection of real ales in different styles from six of ten handpumps, and my pint of Swannay Dark Munro (£2.65) was the ideal accompaniment to a relaxed late Sunday breakfast.

This is one of JDW's latest offerings dating from Spring 2016 that by the sound of the review from 2010 below was previously a right dump. It's been done up in the current JDW vogue with rooms for eating at the front and a journey through something of a labyrinth to reach the rear bar area. It is mostly wood flooring with much better fixtures and fitting than the old 1990s shop conversions. Despite being a hotel they have still managed to place the toilets upstairs! It was pretty busy on my early Friday evening visit. Beer prices are high for a Northern JDW but not outrageous with the standard guest price being £2.49. Food prices are higher with the Steak Club coming in at £9.15. The bar has two banks of six hand pumps which had one unused, one available soon, the JDW Trio Of Doom, Caledonian Seasoned Traveller IPA, Hop Studio Raja & Blush, Rudgate Dick Firkin, Great Newsome Jem's Stout, Osset Sizzler and Acorn Summer Daze. I went for the Dick Firkin (£2.49) which was in good condition. I thought this was a good new Spoons.
