A traditional pub located somewhat off the beaten track, it seems very much a local’s pub and was populated by many workmen types on a recent early evening visit. Barmaid seemed friendly enough though, and there seems to be plenty of events going on. It’s essentially an L-shaped pub divided in to lounge and public bars. The lounge bar to the left had a flagstone floor and some exposed stone walling and next to this was more of a snug area with a carpeted floor, green wood panelling on the lower part of the walls with cream plasterwork above and a small brick fire-place with a wood burning stove, although this was not in use on our visit. This had something of a musical theme with a couple of guitars up on the wall and a number of Elvis pictures as well as a several pencil drawings of Sheryl Crow and Texas among others, and some black and white photographs including Bob Marley and Freddy Mercury. The public bar to the right included a pool table and darts board, while the large garden included a patio and picnic benches as well as a stage area which appeared to have hosted The Wurzels among others, going on some of the photos inside the pub. A few sea angling trophies were up on a shelf and various karaoke, quiz and live music nights were advertised. The menu offered an extensive selection of “pub grub” dishes such as chilli con carne, burger, scampi & chips and a curry as well as several pies, and these were mostly priced around £7/£8. There was also a specials board offering a few more options, although most of these were in a similar vein to the regular menu rather than being anything “special”. A salmon with sweet chilli dressing was tasty enough and a generous portion, but the salmon was somewhat overcooked. Beers on tap were Henry’s IPA and 6X, whilst ciders were Blackthorn and Thatcher’s Gold, although many of the punters appeared to be drinking cans of Natch.
