The Rising Sun, St Margarets, Twickenham

Located near the entrance to Marble Hill House, this thoroughly refurbished pub stands out due to its white paint scheme. The light decor is replicated inside too, giving an appealing appearance on a sunny day. Partly opened out, but both connected spaces are rather crammed with furniture (although the place was very busy when I called by on a Sunday afternoon and the only available seat was a stool at the bar). Patio beer garden to front and side full too. Good choice of beers from four handpumps: Shere Drop, Andwell Resolute, Oakham Citra and Thornbridge Wye (£3.60). Reasonable selection of keg beers and bottled beers as well. I enjoyed my brief visit here, so worth a visit if in the area.

This pub used to be called The Rising Sun, and has now presumably been named after Marble Hill House which sits in the park opposite, and was once the residence of one Henrietta Howard who was a mistress of George II when he was the Prince of Wales. This is a Young’s house, which had on their Special and Bitter during my visit. I didn’t look at the menu, but it was clear that they did food. This is a pub that looks as if it has been the subject of a ferocious Young’s makeover. It’s bare-boarded with rugs tastefully placed, has banquettes with numerous cushions scattered on them, large orange lampshades, garish floral patterned wallpaper, and more garish patterned bucket armchairs. There’s a modern gas fire with the flames being emitted through marble chippings, empty wine bottles on the window ledges, and the decor included an old sewing machine on a wooden pedestal. There was some laid back soul tunes being played, at low level background volume. There is a garden area at the back, with some tables and chairs in open booths. However it was still a reasonably comfortable place to stop off for a beer, even if these modernistic places are not really my cup of tea. I certainly wouldn’t go out of my way to visit again, but it was clean and bright, and I imagine that a lot of people would appreciate this style of pub.
