The Maidenhead, Ludlow

Set away from the centre of Orleton village on a B-road, the Maidenhead (as it has been re-named) feels more of a dining pub than the other pub in the village. There is a bar area to the right as you enter with a dartboard and a TV for sports. To the left is a small lounge area with a dining room beyond that. Further seating can be found in the garden at the rear. The barmaid was having a bit of a problem with the gas when we arrived. One of the 2 other customers could not have the Madri he ordered, whilst my wife's first choice was also scuppered. On the real ale front, the regular beers are Wye Valley HPA & Butty Bach. 2 guest beers were Hobson's Best Bitter & Ludlow Stairway. I quite enjoyed the Stairway.

Just a quick half here as it was opening time as I was passing on my bike. I was expecting a food-oriented country pub, but with six real ales advertised on the bar, this turned out to be a bit of a find. (See photos for details.) An obvious regular turned up a few seconds before me, and went for the John Smiths Smooth crap - he doesn't know what he's missing. The pub was renamed the Bakers Arms because they do also bake bread here. I'd love to come back for a longer session, but this is one of those mysterious pubs in the middle of nowhere: where do all the drinkers come from? Date of visit: 20th April 2017
