The Hillsborough Hotel, Sheffield

Top place for the real ale trail as not only do they serve from the handpulls on the front of the bar, if you see a beer you want from the pumpclips on the back they will bring it up from the cellar for you, even if drinking in halves. Good choice of their own Crown ales available as well as a variety of guest beers, and good quality reasonably priced food available too. Deserves its 2011 entry in the Good Beer Guide. On this occasion we enjoyed Crown Dizzy Gillespie, Crown Brooklyn Heights and North Yorkshire Bullseye Black. Superb.

Fine pub that is exactly as described by OB except that they have a patio area around the conservatory. We sat on the patio bit in the blazing sunshine last Saturday afternoon as part of our "Valley Of Beer" crawl. I had a pint of their own Hillsborough Pale Ale and Ms Camra had a Timmermans Kriek. I could have sat here for some time but we had to continue on our way to the Wellington. We'll definitely be back.

Brick built corner pub and hotel located very close to the Langsett/ Primrose View stop on the Middlewood/Malin Bridge supertram route going north from the city centre. The pub part comprises two long rooms with a conservatory at the back. Crossing the threshold with “Gilmours” picked out in mosaic, the small bar counter is located to the right and the two rooms are furnished with modern pine tables and slightly uncomfortable high back chairs, designed for dining rather than drinking. Both rooms have similar décor cream and yellow one side and cream and green the other, there is a rack of newspapers in the bar room. So far, so ordinary but the ales, some brewed here (Crown) and others from small northern breweries, are superbly kept and served by staff who provide excellent customer service, you know your custom is valued here. There are eight handpumps, four with Crown beers, and a discreetly placed collection of keg taps for more unusual European beers, I noticed Tindermans and Leffe. Fairly busy on a wet Friday lunchtime with a mix of dining families and dedicated beer drinkers. A GBG regular with good reason.
