The Humphrey Bean (JD Wetherspoon), Tonbridge

A former Post Office, this typical JDW consists of one large bar occupying the former counter area and a modern beam-and-post extension to the rear. There is a garden which has pleasant views out across the River to the castle, the garden part-covered by an open pavillion. A large central skylight gives the whole pub an open, airy feel. A set of bookshelves in the front section caters for the few locals who can read. Five ales on, all with a horsey theme, plus one cider. I had a pint of Horsham's Iron Horse, which, as is typical of JDWs, was served much too cold, but it tasted OK once allowed to warm up a bit. Staff were friendly but highly inefficient, but it has rid itself of most the worst kind of drinkers who used to frequent it. Worth dropping in for a quick pint if you happen to be in the Town centre.
