The Regal Moon (JD Wetherspoon), Rochdale

As noted below this cinema conversion has not retained much of the old cinema inside so it's basically a JDW barn. Most people seemed to be drinking in here late on a Wednesday afternoon. A drop down screen was showing Wimblebore which put me off but was forgotten when I realised they appeared to have all 20 festival ciders. The 12 hand pumps had a good choice with the two GK beers, Naylor's Citradelic & Toffee Mild, Acorn Old Moor Porter doubled, Elland 1872, Moorhouse Pendle, Ilkley Pale, Saltaire New World Red, Phoenix Wobbly Bob and Hawkshead Windermere Pale. I went for the strongest cider I hadn't tried (£2.95) which was called Somerset Redstreak. I thought this was a very good Spoons.

Just decided to visit this wether's boozer as its only a short tram ride from where i live in Oldham. The atmosphere and overall layout of the place is standard wether's but the choice of ales more than met my expectations. Well worth a visit just for the excellent real ales on offer.Will be calling in again over Christmas.

From the inside you'd never know it used to be a picture house. Outside, however, it does. A large cavernous place and quite acceptable.

I didn't realise that The Regal Moon was a converted cinema until I was told after our visit which is an indication as to how many features have been retained. To me it felt like a standard, fairly soulless 'spoons. Nonetheless, the beer range was very good although the only one which I managed to note was the Elland 1872 Porter which was excellent and gives a clue as to the quality of ale offered. It's well worth a visit for the interesting ale selection but it is, ultimately, still a standard 'spoons.

Converted from an old cinema,there are two entrances to this large 'spoons.The interior does not contain as much cinema decor or internal structure as some other cinema conversions I have been to ,but the ale range and quality mark this out as one not to miss.One rank of handpumps have pump clips all marked "coming soon" but I felt this was a genuine attempt to keep local drinkers informed rather than a bit of beer teasing.The two ranks of operational handpumps had a varied and interesting selection of real ale besides the usual suspects.My Elland 1872 Porter was in top condition,and the rest of the crew were pleased with their selection .Just a shame my notetaking ability had been overwhelmed by beer consumption on our last drink of the evening visit.I would most definitely return,it's a very good 'spoons indeed.

The Regal Moon is a large town centre Wetherspoons pub, located in a grand building, which dates back to 1938 when it opened as the Regal cinema. The interior feels pretty vast on entering with row upon row of seating in the lower level section at the front of the pub. The servery is located about halfway back along the right hand wall, with a raised seating area beyond complete with fireplace and typical Wetherspoons booths with coloured glass that matches the pub’s windows. A second entrance can be found at the rear of the pub where there is also a limited amount of outdoor seating. There are a few nice features including several ornate pillars, a mannequin playing an organ above the bar and lots of pictures of various entertainers from cinema history. Three banks of six hand pumps allow for a strong ale selection including ‘Spoons regulars, plenty of guests and the odd cider. I tried a pint of the Goose Eye Black Moor (£2.10) which was on fine form and very enjoyable. The staff seemed like a well drilled bunch and I thought they were very friendly and helpful. I understand that the pub was named Wetherspoons cask pub of the year for 2011 and with such a good range of well kept beer, it’s hard to argue with that assessment. I think the best Wetherspoons pubs combine great beer with an interesting old building and this place certainly ticks both of those boxes. With friendly service as well, this is definitely one of the best Wetherspoons I have found on my travels and it should merit a visit regardless of your views on the chain.
