The King Of Wessex (JD Wetherspoon), Bath

This is a typical ‘spoons that has all the character of a railway bar. It comprises a single long room, furnished with the usual ‘spoons mix of normal tables and chairs and tall tables/tall stools, and as you might expect of a ‘spoons pub in the centre of Bath was doing a very good trade (about 50 or so people in) at 11.30 on a Tuesday morning. Obviously it has a decent beer range at the usual cheap prices, and cheap and simple food. This one is more like drinking in a canteen than most ‘spoons I’ve been to. It’s characterless but functional.

Standard-issue modern 'spoons, suffering when I visited from a severe lack of staff meaning slow service and many uncleared tables. Having said that, the barman was pleasant and very apologetic once one finally got served. Ten handpumps in total, with a reasonable selection including a decent pint of Wibblers Dengie Dark (£2.29). Overall, hopefully I just caught it on something of a bad day...
