Fanny by Gaslight, Kilmarnock

Positioned adjacent to Kilmarnock railway station this pub has had a string of different names over the last 170 years or so, and has more recently had a makeover both on the inside and outside,which includes a line of balustrades running the length of the roof.On entry this Victorian styled pub and eatery has a fair amount of curios and other miscellany but perhaps the most interesting feature by far is the central oval shaped island bar that is complete with the interior gantry(Other prime examples of this type are The Abbotsford in Edinburgh and Glasgow's Old Toll Bar and The Horseshoe which has an overall circumference of 104ft and also thought to be the first of it's kind) Called in around noon on a Sunday where they were just setting up for the Sunday lunchtime diners, and although a little shy on cask beer,this was made up for by the friendly and knowledgeable landlord's detailed account of the pubs colourful history. There are lots of activities going on here on quite a few nights including live groups on a Sunday.If ever I am in Kilmarnock again I will certainly make a re-visit.

An interesting Victorian interior which is listed on CAMRAs National Inventory, I had ample time to study it while waiting for any staff to appear. Luckily for the single other customer his glass was half full. Cast iron Corinthian columns are the most noticeable feature as well as a lovely island bar and fine plastered ceiling. There is a solitary handpull with Caledonian Flying Scotsman on this occasion, but as the only staff member I spotted was deeply involved in some food preparation I didn't get to try any - I think only a half might have been in order anyway. I left after about five minutes. There must have been someone there the next night as some live music was on.

fanny's is a great wee pub tht has great bands playing every Friday, it has recently been done up and looks classy so if you havnt been before GET THERE :)

Fanny's is, quite honestly, the lowest of Kilmarnock pubs. And that is saying a lot. It's kept alive by its clientelle and nothing else. The place needs to be fumigated and deep (DEEP) cleaned (and has been this way for about the last 5 years). Doctors will recommend a spate of vaccinations before entering Fanny's.

Fanny's has the longest, and oldest circular bar in the west, and good bands every weekend. Sunday is "Curryoke" nite. A good laff and a good curry.
