The Castle Inn, Newport

An end terraced 17th century brick built pub, with stone lintels, which claims to be the oldest pub in Newport. It has a patio area at the back and is in the GBG 2010 The interior has two rooms and there is a separate function room and skittle alley called the Stable Bar. The pub rooms are a bar and a dining room. The bar is in wood panel, with beamed ceilings and has a stone floor, with the wood bar to the right on entry and a nice brick fireplace. The dining room is in brick, wood panel and white plaster ceiling, with wood floors and another impressive fireplace – the tables and chairs are in dark wood as well – with candles on them. There wasn’t much in the way of pictures and ephemera, but the whole atmosphere of the pub is a delight. The service was excellent, with a mature and friendly clientele. Beer; tap stuff, with Leffe, with London Pride, Spitfire, Hobgoblin and a very good Goddard’s 1864 Bitter A sheer delight to visit, well worthy of its GBG status, with a pleasant atmosphere and good service. A must.
