The Vulcan, Huddersfield

Small town centre pub with emphasis on traditional food and deals thereon. Near the market it was bustling with workers at lunchtime. One bar with some limited seating around the top end and there is a pool room at the front. A number of real ales kept well.

This is a long narrow town centre pub, a short walk from the train station. The interior has been opened out a fair bit, with the bar counter running along the left hand wall, whilst there are a number of large alcoves on the right hand side creating a bit of partitioning. The front of the pub has some open space with limited seating although there was a DJ using this area to play music of the 'High Ho Silver Lining' variety at deafening levels during my late evening visit. The first alcove opposite the bar houses a pool table with drinking shelves along the perimeter and the second one has some comfortable looking banquettes. The rear of the pub is carpeted and is furnished with regular tables and chairs. A TV screen was on at the back showing Match of the Day. The place had already been decorated for Christmas, but putting the tinsel aside, there wasn't really all that much in the way of interesting decor that I could see. Three handpulls were dispensing Summer Wine Vega (£2.50), Titanic Iceberg and Copper Dragon Golden Pippin. I tried the Vega which was a decent enough pint and the lady who served me was very quick to spot me waiting in the crowd. This is a solid enough pub, that I suspect I caught at a bit of a bad time, but after the riches of the town's other hostelries, it seems like something of a disappointment. I finished my pint and decided to call it a night, only to get back to my hotel room and find that the hotel bar was hosting a wedding reception, resulting in several more hours of listening to music of the 'High Ho Silver Lining' variety. Plus ca change.
