Saint Paul's House, Birmingham

The historic, if rather plain, facade disguises the fact that this is a pub until you get quite close to the front door. Inside, there are two main seating areas - one up a couple of steps - and the decor is rather more modern than one might expect. Three real ales on handpump: Pedigree, Brakspear and Cocker Hoop.

Large open plan, high ceiling Marstons house, on the opposite site of St Pauls Square to the Rectory and in my opinion far superior. Very friendly efficient service it has quite a loungy feel, comfy chairs and there are sofas in front of the windows overlooking the church gardens. Pictures of old Birmingham on the cream walls, there are lots of square lines and wood panelling. There is a chandelier above the main bar area. There is a traditional menu, food around the £6 mark. There were 3 staple Marstons real ales - Brakespear Bitter (seems to be getting far too common for my liking!), Pedigree and Jennings Hunny-bole, which was well kept.

Previously a Wetherspoons. Now adopted and refurbed by Marston's. Smart interior and three real ales on offer (although none on the Saturday we visited, possibly because it is busier during the week due to its usual office-type clientele). The service was quick but the staff seemed to have a problem getting a simple food order right.
