The Castle Tavern, Richmond

In the lower corner of the Market Place, this is a pub on two levels due to the steepness of the road at this point. The main area is long and thin. The front part is in a victorian style with some original features, especially in the ceiling, open fireplace and carved wood, however I think the stained glass screens are modern tat. The counter is half way down the middle section in a plainer style and at the rear is an area with some high tables and chairs plus some benches, décor here is of old photos of the local area. To the right on entering some steps lead down to a cosy snug with traditional furnishings and more old photos. There are three handpumps, Hobgoblin, Black Sheep Bitter and Golden Sheep plus the usual kegs being the choice on my visit. My Golden Sheep was fairly mundane and very, very cold. There are big screens at both ends of the pub plus a games machine and well stocked juke box. The staff were sweary but friendly and there was some excellent banter among the few regulars.

Rather boreing I'm afraid. Average decor, average service and no atmosphere. I think in this day and age you need to put in more effort to make a pub successful.
