Sextons at Hampton Court, Hampton Court, East Molesey

On the main A 308 road opposite Hampton Court Green is The Cardinal Wolsey, a smallish one bar Sheps pub. The pub is situated next to some are Royal Mews where there are Queens Stables. It’s a bare boarded pub with a single L shaped bar. A separate area on the right acts as a games room and houses a snooker table and dartboard. Seating consists mainly of traditional tables and chairs positioned in such a way that food trade may dominate at busy times. It’s a rather plain uninteresting interior. Despite the close proximity of Hampton Court Palace – which was of course built by Cardinal Wolsey – there is little in the way of framed pictures / photographs of relevant interest. Indeed, décor wise the most notable feature is probably a largish etched mirror depicting a picture of “Powers Free House”, as the pub was evidently once called. I remember the pub in the 1970’s as a Fullers pub and it was called The Cardinal Wolsey then, so presumably this mirror predates that. The pub advertises gigs on Friday and Saturday evenings, hosted in what I presume is the main bar, as I didn’t see any indication of a function room. Beers on were Spitfire ( £ 3.30p ) and Master Brew. This is a rather ordinary pub to be honest and it’s not going down for a revisit
