Barton Turns Inn, Burton on Trent

Something of a flying visit as we ordered our beer and then poured it into leather tankards to drink after we had worked the lock outside. This led to much confusion with the friendly and welcoming governor who had never seen two empty pint glasses appear on the bar so quickly after having served them. The reviews below give accurate descriptions of the interior and I would only add that the main bar feels welcoming and comfortable helped by a lit coal fire on our visit. The loos are also clean and fully functional. Three beers available were all from the Marstons stable: Pedigree, which was in top condition, Brakspears Oxford Pale Ale and one from Jennings which I'd never seen before but didn't note the name. Well worth a stop if you're passing.

The Barton Turns Inn is a decent looking pub that is in a nice location facing the Trent and Mersey canal. Once inside the main bar had a tiled floor and leather bench seats with normal tables and chairs,there was a small dining area to the right and a small lounge to the rear left,this area was carpeted,there was also a tropical fish tank next to the bar which looked quite nice. There was a real fire on the go which gave the pub a nice cosy feel to it. The pub is a Marstons tied house and there were three real ales on the bar i had a drink of Marstons EPA which was a very nice well kept drink,the other beers were Pedigree and Banks's Sunbeam. I quite liked this pub as it was a proper pub for drinkers. Pub visited 29/9/2012

A detached brick built canalside pub, with cream facade, white windows and a band of brown bricks at the base. There is a front patio area and a rear beer garden. The interior has a single L-shaped room, which is divided into three segments. To the left on entry is the dart area, which has red and wood panelled walls, with a red ceiling and a few local photos on the walls. The main serving bar area is straight ahead on entry and is in red and mustard, with some wood panel, a white ceiling and a red and black tiled floor. There is a fireplace feature, canal memorabilia and a wood cabinet with some trophies. There is a TV, which had the footy on. The third area, behind the bar and fireplace seems to be in red and mustard as well, but doesn't seem to be used. The place does food at £7-10 and the tables in the bar seem to be able to cope (unless the other area is also used!). There was no music and the service was fine. There was just us at my last visit, but a few regulars were in tonight watching the game. Beer; tap stuff, with a decent Banks's Dark MILD. There are a couple of handpulls with Pedigree and Wychwood Dirty Tackle I like this place. It offers the traditionalist like myself a choice compared to the modern Waterfront in the Marina. So, barge people, slip the lock onto slow fill and nip in for one!
