Prominent pub located in a small square just off of Blackboy Hill. It's got a decent pub feel to the place with a large L-shaped bar and a smaller bar off to the left with a piano. There's a small terrace area out at the front. It seems to be undergoing something of a spruce up at present, there was a definite fresh paint aroma about the place. Years ago this place used to be rammed with students, but on a recent Saturday evening visit it was relatively quiet. Not empty, but no problem getting a seat either. There were a few people eating, but the pub is certainly not food dominated (even though there are cup cakes on the bar!). Staff were polite and efficient – it makes a change to get an apology when the barmaid's busy serving the food and so can't get to the bar to serve you. Beers on this occasion were Bass, Courage Best, Butcombe and Gem. Ciders were Thatcher's Gold and Addlestones, both of which were very good. Well worth a visit.
