Peter Kavanaghs, Liverpool

the beer choice is as good as it needs to be, the joy here is in the multiple room classic interior, a destination drinkers pub par excellence. I tried twice to find it without a map and failed spectacularly, nice to finally drink a pint here although it was pretty dead on a Wednesday afternoon.

Just in case you didn't know, this pub is named after Peter Kavanagh, who was licensee for over 50 years until his death in 1950. It is on CAMRA's National Inventory of pubs with historic interiors. This pub is thankfully unchanged since Pubsignman's visit a few years ago; in fact I don't think that it's changed much since Peter Kavanagh's day. The extravagant murals in the two separate rooms on the right are especially interesting. The original pub has been extended into adjoining properties over the years, creating the carpeted lounge and raised area on the left. The mass of bric a brac is still there, which I always think makes a pub more interesting. The most unusual for me was the crocodile skin; or maybe the penny farthing bicycle. There were five real ales, and when one went off it was swiftly replaced by another one, which is a good management practice in my book. Although this pub is somewhat off the beaten track, it really is worth the effort of seeking out. It's a top pub.

The view of the rich dark, eccentrically decorated interior shown on "View Inside" of Peter Kavanaghs has tempted me to travel there and see it very soon.

Now reopened after a short period of closure for a spruce up. Exactly the same as before but its now had 100 years of dust removed and its all polished and shiny.
