The Roebuck, W4

Dating from the early 18th century, this place was rebuilt in 1892, featuring attractive pargetted roebucks to the parapet. Aside from a little dark wood panelling to a left-hand wall and part of the bar front, there’s nothing of the original structure here, with a boarded floor, then an utterly gastrofied interior with pale grey paint to the dado rail then white paint to a white ceiling (see photo); low furniture is traditional, the tall stuff less so. There’s a noisy open kitchen, lighting from spotlights or spun metals shades, with décor in the shape of trendy framed prints, the whole being more gastro than pub, the halibut dish attesting to this at £27 a portion. Customers were prosperous locals, seemingly none dining and few in number for a Wednesday evening. The ale selection amounted to Landlord (clip reversed), Pride then Ghost Ship in fair shape, but at a wincing £3.00 a half. This is a dull, utterly made over, soulless place, more restaurant than pub, the higher-than-central-London pricing rubbing salt into the wounds.

A decent enough pub but lacking any character.Yep Adnams -Gunhill was on but I doubt any pub could make this a great beer.

Upmarket madeover pub, partially opened out to form a large staple-shaped layout. This comprises the main bar at the front, a smaller seating area with separate counter at the side and the large rear dining room. Restrained gastro-pub decor. Very busy on a pre-Christmas Friday evening. Medium background music. Three of the four handpumps were operational, offering Doom Bar, Cornish Coaster and Adnams Gunhill (£3.75).
