Founders Arms, Southbank, SE1

Modern 1970’s-build pub on the South Bank of the Thames, commanding a fairly spectacular view if you’re lucky enough to bag a terrace seat during the day. The usual Wells & Youngs selections – Ordinary, Special, Bombardier and a seasonal, with a decent selection of bottled beer in the fridges. The beer quality is usually quite acceptable. The interior is perhaps a bit devoid of ‘pubbiness’ but I’ve always found it to be mundanely pleasant – you spend most of your time in there gawping out of the big glass windows at the North Bank anyway. I’ve eaten here before and the food was quite acceptable, if a little on the pricey side. Staff are transient so it’s hit-and-miss as to whether you get a good one or not. I’d recommend it as a worthy stop for the view on a quiet day, but there’s obviously much better pubs nearby. It depends what you’re here for.
