This is a most impressively large pub, sitting in splendid isolation just outside Pett’s Wood train station. It features frontages of classic Brewers’ Tudor on the first floor level, with red brick walls at ground floor. Thankfully and surprisingly, the red brick frontage has not been spoiled by being painted. The interior has been largely opened up, but still has at least a couple of “see-through” fireplaces indicating where dividing walls would once have been, one of which has the distinctive Charrington’s feature of spiral brick pillars surrounding it. Although it is an ex-Charrington pub, I didn’t spot any of the trademark green banded windows, but instead they had small lozenge shaped lead bound panes. They’re quite attractive, but not quite so distinctive as the original windows would have been. Some of the walls had some nice fielded wooden panelling on them, but the most unusual feature here was the plaster panels featuring fairies and birds and the like. I was told that there is a ballroom downstairs but I didn’t get to visit it. With such a large and imposing pub you obviously get some outside seating. I had a pint of Sunny Beach Blond in here which was in great nick. Other ales were less interesting, such as Marston’s EPA, London Pride and Doom Bar. As I recall the prices for drink, and food, were very reasonable, but for some reason I didn’t make a note of them. I would recommend this pub as a comfortable place to stop off for a pint and a bite to eat if you’re passing through Pett’s Wood. I would visit again if I was in the area.
