The Kings Head, Barnet

A single L-shaped carpeted room dominated rather by the pool table in the front area. Not much in the way of seating either, two or three tables being dominated by the rather downmarket shouty and sweary clientele, some of which were covered by jackets and such but this isn't the place to request people to shift stuff, it's a quick pint and off place. A few plates and jugs over a high ceiling beam, dartboard in a case to one side. St George's flags everywhere, yes I know the date but they weren't new. McMullen's Ales, AK reversed, one unclipped and the IPA was average (£3.10). I won't be back.

Not as good as it used to be now theres a Pool table stuck right in the middle of the Bar at front as it tends to put a lot of people off coming in as soon as they see it though the front window. Only real Ales on tap during our visit was AK Or IPA. Was a good Pub just a few years ago but it seems to have got very run down a bit lately. Not a bad Pub for a quick Pint but its not a destination Pub I would go back too for the evening.

Occupying a High Street position opposite the prominent church of St John the Baptist is The Kings Head, a single bar McMullens pub. It’s a comfortable pub that, whilst retaining some original features, is somewhat unremarkable in its totality. A mahogany bar with Victorian light fittings gives rise to a pleasant, traditional feel, but, on my recent Saturday lunchtime visit, the juke box was banging out Elvis Presley hits rather louder than appropriate for that early hour. A small games area at the front of the pub features a pool table and dartboard. On the rear wall is an impressively large Worthington Ales mirror. Apart from this games area, the pub is carpeted throughout. The pub was reasonably busy for 11.30 on a Saturday morning, but this might have been due to the fact that other pubs didn’t seem to be opening till midday. 3 Macs beers were on – AK, IPA and a beer called True Love. The pump clip for this features a heart and I presume this was a special brew for the recent Valentines Day. The AK - £ 2.85p – was pretty poor. Virtually all the other customers were drinking either lager or Guinness. I’m not marking this one down for a return visit

I wasn't at all impressed with this pub as it seems that maybe the managers have let it run down. There are seven ale pumps, three of which are unused and the other four are for the AK, which was OK. Guinness, Stella, Fosters and Strongbow were also on, so hardly a wide and varied choice of draught refreshment is available. I popped in on Saturday night and was quite surprised that there were only 4 other customers as this is a high street boozer and the Mitre and After Office Hours next door were pretty busy. I was even more surprised that when I left there was only one person left, not that this bothered the barman who seemed to be having fun playing with the dog behind the bar. There are two old TVs, but I didn't spot any sport advertised so I'm not sure if they have Sky. There are also two dartboards and a pool table. Strangely the pool table is on the oche of one of the dartboards so maybe there is some strange pooldart game that is played in Hertfordshire that I have not come across before. The only other entertainment was the humming of the extractor fan over the deafening silence. This could be a great pub, but sadly at the moment it is not any where near it.
