The Ship Anson, Portsmouth

Named after Admiral Anson, the 18th Century reformer of the Royal Navy, The Ship Anson is a double-fronted mock Tudor GK pub overlooking the Harbour.On one side is the bar area, usually congested due to the slow nature of the service here, and on the other a nice mix of leather banquettes and dining tables. It's a lively pub, the clientele appearing to consist of the more mature naval and military population of Portsmouth. There are gaming machines, but these are not noisy, food at reasonable prices and lots of naval memorabilia dotted around. The staff, as well as being inefficient, are a bit immature. The atmosphere is friendly and civilised. There was only one ale on, Speckled Hen. which was in good condition and quite enjoyable. It's worth dropping in for a pint on the way to or from the Gosport Ferry and I'd be happy to include it in a crawl.
